After being passed by the Bundestag, on 7 May 2021 the amendment to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG = German WEEE conversion) was also approved by the Bundesrat. This legislation is aimed at expanding the network of return points in order to increase the collection rate of electronic waste, but also of reusable appliances.
By means of the amendment to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, the Federal Government extends the take-back obligations to include discounters, supermarkets and other grocery retailers. take-e-way had reported in detail about the new requirements and obligations on 3 May 2021; you can find the article here.
According to the Bundesrat, some 25,000 companies in the food retail sector are affected.
The Act will be forwarded by the Federal Government to the Federal President for signature and will subsequently be promulgated in the Federal Law Gazette. In order to allow retailers to make the necessary adjustments, the Act will take effect on 1 January 2022. A transitional period of six months will then apply to the trade sector.
