USB-C: EU Parliament adopts uniform charging cable

The decision makes USB-C ports mandatory for mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, mobile game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems and charging cases of in-ear headphones. Somewhat later, probably in 2026, USB-C connections will then also become mandatory for laptops.

trade-e-bility already reported that mobile phones and numerous other electrical devices in the EU will be required to have a standardised charging socket from 2024.

As Heise.de now reports, the EU Parliament has agreed on a resolution that prescribes a uniform charging cable for electrical appliances. Smartphones, tablets, speakers and other devices must have a USB-C port in the future. Now only the member states still need to approve the final decision. This is considered a formality. Final approval is to be given at the end of October, and the regulation is to be put into practice from autumn 2024.

“The decision makes USB-C ports mandatory for mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, mobile game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems and charging cases of in-ear headphones. Somewhat later, probably in 2026, USB-C connections will then also become mandatory for laptops,” Heise continues.

The example shows that optimal legal monitoring is necessary as an existential risk precaution in order to protect you under product law. If you have any questions, the trade-e-bility advisory team will be happy to help you via beratung@trade-e-bility.de or +49/40/75068730-0.
