Tetrabromobisphenol A becomes subject to RoHS substance ban

This is a major challenge for manufacturers, importers in general and importers of electrical and electronic products in particular. After all, it must be ensured that tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), currently the most commonly used flame retardant, is replaced.

In May this year, the EU Commission launched a legislative initiative to expand the list of hazardous substances for electrical and electronic equipment. The restriction of the use of certain substances is governed by RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Until now, the heavy metals lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium VI as well as some organic flame retardents have been governed by this Directive. Two more flame retardants are now to be added to the list, namely MCCP and TBBP-A.

This is a major challenge for manufacturers, importers in general and importers of electrical and electronic products in particular. After all, it must be ensured that the most commonly used flame retardent tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is replaced. A draft of the new RoHS legislation is expected before the end of the year. trade-e-bility provides its customers with timely information on upcoming legislative changes and supports them in the technical implementation of the relevant requirements.
