As the EU Parliament reported, the latter adopted (by 509 votes to 3 with 13 abstentions) its demands for a European Commission proposal on the “right to repair” planned for 2022. The MEPs are calling for products to be designed to last longer, to be safe to repair, and for their parts to be easily accessible and removable.
In addition, the MEPs call for harmonised rules for such consumer information, including details on repair ratings, estimated useful life, spare parts, repair services and the period during which software updates are available.
Moreover, the MEPs call for possible smart labelling tools such as QR codes or digital product passports as well as a possible joint liability mechanism between manufacturers and sellers in case of product non-compliance.
