Product recalls – when are they necessary?

The German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) has published a guide on the subject of risk assessment and recall management. If you are affected by this, you should keep an eye on your products even after sale. Should there be any indications of a possible product risk, a risk assessment is mandatory.

There may be many and various reasons why those placing a product on the market in the EU may feel the need to assess their product for the risk of damage occurring on the market. Feedback from customers about accidents with or caused by the product, media reports about incidents with similar products on the market or the discovery of a deviation of the design of the product from the requirements of relevant standards are worthy of mention as such. Only if this assessment identifies a serious risk will a product recall be initiated, if applicable.
