According to the EAR Foundation, electromagnetic pickups for musical instruments have been within the scope of application of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act since its inception. The reason: they generate currents and voltages by means of induction. Pickups belong to the class of small devices and therefore to category 5.
Electrically operated instruments such as electric guitars usually have to be registered as large instruments in category 4. The manufacturer is considered to be an assembler if it uses pickups that are already registered and reported. The weight of the pickups must then be deducted from the quantity report.
