Finland: Batteries and accumulators must be registered by 31.12.2021

With effect from 19 July 2021, a comprehensive reform of the Waste Act 646/2011 has come into force in Finland. Extended producer responsibility for batteries and accumulators now also applies to all non-Finnish companies selling portable, industrial or automotive batteries directly to Finnish households or professional end-users.

Foreign producers can fulfil their obligations either by joining a producer organisation directly or by appointing an authorised representative to fulfil their obligations. On the way to successful registration, take-e-way will be happy to assist you.

Foreign distance sellers have to fulfil their obligations as producers by 31 December 2021 at the latest. This requires the affiliation to a take-back system either by the producer directly or through an authorised representative.

In addition to foreign distance sellers who require mandatory registration for the sale of batteries and accumulators, the following parties may also voluntarily take on the registration and quantity reporting of batteries:

  1. Foreign producers selling batteries and accumulators to Finnish resellers.

  2. Online sales platform administrator:

Online sales platform administrator can assume producer responsibility for the distance sellers operating on the platform. However, this requires the written consent of the distance seller.

If you sell batteries to Finland or would like to know more about this reform, please contact Marie Elfert via international@take-e-way.de or +49/40/750687-127.
