For secondary packaging, transport packaging and packaging for e-commerce, the proportion of empty space may not exceed 50%. Producers must use lighter packaging with less volume.

The EU Parliament has announced that the new EU packaging regulation (PPWR) was adopted on 24 April 2024 by 476 votes to 129 with 24 abstentions (take-e-way reported). Here you can find an extract of the important points:

  • For secondary packaging, transport packaging and packaging for e-commerce, the proportion of empty space may not exceed 50%
  • Manufacturers must use lighter packaging with less volume
  • Ban on certain single-use plastic packaging
  • Prohibition of perpetual chemicals (PFAS) in food contact packaging
  • Reuse of transport, sales and outer packaging
  • Strict requirements for the recyclability of packaging
  • Minimum targets for the recycled content of plastic packaging
  • Minimum targets for the recycling of packaging waste

Before the agreement can enter into force, the Council must also formally approve it.
