The EU Parliament has announced that the new EU packaging regulation (PPWR) was adopted on 24 April 2024 by 476 votes to 129 with 24 abstentions (take-e-way reported). Here you can find an extract of the important points:
- For secondary packaging, transport packaging and packaging for e-commerce, the proportion of empty space may not exceed 50%
- Manufacturers must use lighter packaging with less volume
- Ban on certain single-use plastic packaging
- Prohibition of perpetual chemicals (PFAS) in food contact packaging
- Reuse of transport, sales and outer packaging
- Strict requirements for the recyclability of packaging
- Minimum targets for the recycled content of plastic packaging
- Minimum targets for the recycling of packaging waste
Before the agreement can enter into force, the Council must also formally approve it.
