As Euwid reports, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has commissioned a study to improve the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG = German WEEE conversion), as Germany has been failing to meet its collection targets for waste electrical and electronic equipment for years and the reuse rate is low. Among other things, the study will analyse the responsibility of producers and draw up proposals for increasing collection volumes, reuse and recycling.
DUH criticises the German system of “shared product responsibility”, under which producers are only responsible for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment to a limited extent. In many other EU countries, producers are responsible for collection and recycling via take-back organisations, which is not the case in Germany.
DUH is calling for producers in Germany to take on more responsibility. They currently benefit financially from the fact that no disposal costs are incurred for appliances that are not collected. DUH believes that the lack of responsibility is one reason for the growing quantities of e-waste and the failure to meet collection targets, which has already led to infringement proceedings by the EU Commission.
Euwid points out that figures from the EU statistics authority Eurostat show that the collection targets for e-waste are being missed by a wide margin in almost all member states - despite often different systems.
