The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has included five hazardous chemicals in the candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) and updated one entry. Among other things, electrical, electronic and optical equipment is affected.
The list now includes 247 entries for substances that can harm humans and the environment. Two new substances (octamethyltrisiloxane and perfluorooctamine) are particularly persistent and bioaccumulative. Other substances have toxic or endocrine-disrupting properties and are used in lubricants, greases and polymers, among other things.
Companies must provide information if their products contain more than 0.1% (by weight) of SVHC. Consumers have the right to ask about such substances in products. producers and importers must notify the ECHA within six months. Safety data sheets must be updated.
Products with SVHC cannot receive an EU Ecolabel. A future authorisation requirement could further restrict the use of certain substances.
According to the Waste Framework Directive, companies must also notify the ECHA if the articles they produce contain substances of very high concern in a concentration above 0.1% (per cent weight by weight). This notification is published in the ECHA database for substances of concern in articles (SCIP).
Attention: Fines for SCIP reporting: Incorrect or omitted SCIP notifications of articles containing SVHC are sanctioned with a fine of up to 10,000 euros per case.
