Changed allocation for boilers and hot water storage tanks

The Environment Committee of the Bundesrat is against a reclassification of old boilers and hot water storage tanks in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG), as the current classification of these appliances in the category of heat transmitters is not erroneous or disadvantageous, according to the Committee’s recommendation.

As EUWID reports, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUV) wants to assign boilers and hot water storage tanks in future to categories 4 and 5 – i.e. large and small appliances respectively – depending on the size of the old appliances. The previous listing in category 1 was incorrect, as the appliances do not contain a heat exchanger within the meaning of the law as a component and only serve to heat water. From the point of view of the BMUV, this is merely an “editorial change”.
