Bisphenol A, listed as number 173 in the REACh SVHC list, is a plasticizer used in polycarbonate production. Various studies have indicated that it constitutes a high health risk. Children in particular are believed to be especially at risk.
As early as 2017, PlasticsEurope, a European association of plastics producers, filed a lawsuit against the inclusion of the substance in the SVHC list. This action was dismissed by the European Court of Justice on 21 December 2021. This means that Bisphenol A remains regulated under REACh.
Economic operators responsible for their products, such as manufacturers, importers or fulfillment service providers, should always have knowledge of the materials used in their products and operate a pollutant risk management system to take these into account.
