Air purifiers – a booming market with risks

In 2020, Germany recorded by far the strongest growth in sales of air purifiers among the five largest markets in Europe. When selling air purifiers, it is fatal to advertise with concrete statements in the absence of any verified data. As a matter of principle, all promises of performance should also be verifiable in order to ensure protection against proceedings under competition law.

According to the gfu, Germany recorded by far the strongest growth in sales of air purifiers in 2020 among the five largest markets in Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK). About one million appliances were sold in Germany in the year 2020 (+ 154 per cent), generating a sales volume of around EUR 166 million euros (+ 167 per cent).

Air purification devices in their mobile version can be used universally and, particularly in the cold season, ensure a less stressful room climate with reduced ventilation times and frequencies with regard to the aerosol content of the air breathed.

However, advertising with concrete statements is fatal in the absence of verified data. As a matter of principle, all promises of performance should also be verifiable in order to ensure protection against proceedings under competition law.

Especially in the case of online sales, the offering companies are highly transparent and then observe the legally correct labelling of the appliances without fail.
